Children's Nutrition
Children's nutrition is equally as important as adults'. There are other nutrition recommendations available, but the food guide pyramid is one that most people are familiar with. It informs you about which foods are healthy and which are unhealthy. It also specifies how much of a certain meal should be consumed on a given day. This isn't so much a prescription as it is a guide to help you figure out what's best for you.
The smallest portion of this pyramid is
at the top. Candy, butter, margarine, salad dressing, jelly, sour cream, soda,
and sweet desserts are examples of fats, oils, and sweets. All of these should
be taken in moderation or not at all. Because this is a group to consume sparingly and not
as part of your usual meals, there is no specified portion size for this group.
Milk, yogurt, and cheese make up the
second sector of the food pyramid. Two to three servings per day are required. Skim
milk and nonfat yogurt contain the least fat. These should be utilized often.
One serving of this category is one and a half to two ounces of cheese, which
can replace one cup of milk in terms of calcium. When possible, select "part-skim" or reduced-fat cheeses, as well as reduced-fat milk sweets such as ice milk or frozen
yogurts. One cup of milk or yogurt, one and a half ounces of natural cheese, or
two ounces of processed cheese are all examples of one serving.
Meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts are located in
the third block, which is adjacent to the second block. Lean meat, skinless
chicken, fish, and dry beans and peas are the lowest-fat options. The following
are some tips for cooking beef in a low-fat manner: Instead of frying these
meals, consider trimming away all visible fat, removing all skin from poultry,
and cooking, roasting or broiling them.
